Microsoft is changing its approach by giving users greater authority over the apps included in Windows 11. Unlike previous versions, Windows 11 initially limited the ability to remove certain pre-installed apps without using specific tools or methods. As reported on the Windows Insider blog, the recently announced Windows 11 Insider build 23585 brings several small fixes and improvements to the operating system. Especially for enthusiasts of third-party options, Microsoft has confirmed that a selection of Windows apps can now be uninstalled.
Cortana’s inclusion in the removal list may come as a surprise given its long-standing presence in both Windows 10 and 11. However, Microsoft made the decision to say goodbye to Cortana in August 2023. Following this announcement, the company announced that it plans to remove the Windows Tips feature, making way for Copilot, Cortana’s future successor.
When can you start uninstalling?
For those looking to clean up their Windows 11 system by ditching these default apps, it’s important to note that the update is currently exclusive to Windows 11 Insiders. Users who are not enrolled in the Insider program will have to be patient until the update reaches general availability. Microsoft has also released an update to improve Snipping Tool performance on devices with HDR displays. This build includes several improvements, including fixes to Windows Explorer that reduce crashes in certain scenarios. In addition, the update fixes an issue in the taskbar that prevents the old Teams Chat icon from reappearing.
